Tretchikoff's artistic journey was profoundly influenced by his fascination with Eastern culture, particularly his interest in Buddha, meditating monks, and mythical Chinese creatures. This interest emerged during his teenage years in China in the 1930s, where he was exposed to the rich tapestry of Eastern traditions and spirituality.

During that period, Tretchikoff's graphic work in Shanghai magazines often featured statues of Buddha, meditating monks, and mythical dragons. These subjects served as a reflection of his surroundings and a testament to his genuine interest in the mystical and spiritual aspects of Eastern philosophy and art. In the mid-1970s, Tretchikoff returned to these Eastern subjects in his artwork. Monks and statues of Buddha once again took center stage in his canvases, coinciding with his exhibitions in England and Scotland. This resurgence marked a return to his roots and a rekindling of his connection with the imagery and spirituality that had influenced him during his time in China. Tretchikoff's interest in Eastern spirituality and culture intensified during this period. His art became a means of expressing his lifelong exploration of the irrational, the mystical, and the divine.

Eastern philosophy, with its focus on meditation, enlightenment, and inner peace, offered a rich source of inspiration for Tretchikoff, allowing him to convey the profound and often inexplicable aspects of human existence and the spiritual realm. His art was a reflection of his deep appreciation for Eastern wisdom and spirituality, bridging cultures and conveying the enduring allure of Eastern philosophy and art in the global artistic landscape.
