The artwork Civilized Bali, Java paints a poignant picture of the changing cultural landscape in Java, once revered as an island of bliss but now grappling with the challenges of modernity. Tretchikoff captures the contrast between the island's natural beauty, innocence, and traditional culture, and the encroaching influence of Western civilisation.

In this piece, Java is depicted as a place where sophisticated superficiality competes with the simple joys of traditional life. The women portrayed are shown as self-conscious in their newly acquired dress, hinting at the shift towards modernity and the loss of innocence in their cultural identity. The artwork also alludes to the imposition of a new morality that challenges age-old customs, highlighting the complexities of societal change and adaptation.

Through this work, the artist invites reflection on the consequences of modernisation and globalisation on traditional cultures. It prompts viewers to consider the delicate balance between progress and preservation, raising questions about cultural authenticity and the impact of external influences on indigenous ways of life. Overall, the artwork serves as a thought-provoking commentary on the evolving cultural landscape of Java and the challenges faced by communities striving to maintain their heritage in a rapidly changing world.
