Tretchikoff's Daughter of Java artwork, offers a poignant portrayal of the cultural and societal dynamics prevalent in the region. The artwork retains Tretchikoff's essential impressionistic style, characterised by its emotive brushwork and evocative imagery.

In this piece, the artist sheds light on the role of women in Javanese society, depicting them as submissive figures who often find themselves relegated to the background of men's existence. The woman in the painting embodies the quiet strength and resilience demanded of her, symbolising the spirit of Java's daughters who navigate complex societal expectations.

The significance of the hands in the traditional pose of supplication and prayer adds layers of meaning to the artwork. They represent not only a gesture of submission but also a profound expression of devotion and inner strength. The juxtaposition of these elements highlights the nuanced complexity of the woman's experience, showcasing her ability to find solace and empowerment even within the confines of societal norms.

This work is one of the artist's early canvases painted in Java, capturing the essence of the region's cultural landscape and the challenges faced by its women. Through this artwork, Tretchikoff invites viewers to contemplate themes of identity, agency, and resilience, prompting a deeper understanding of the human experience in diverse cultural contexts.
